What is post-abortion counselling?

What is post-abortion counselling?

Support and counselling after abortion is a service available at all Cura centres. It involves one-to-one counselling for anyone feeling they may need this after a past abortion. This support and counselling is available for women and men, weeks, months or even many years after an abortion for as long as you feel you need it.

This service is available by appointment. You can call us or drop in to one of our centres to arrange an appointment. Usually we can arrange the appointment for the days following your call or visit.

Who will be I be seeing for my appointment?

At your appointment you will meet a counsellor who is specially trained in the area of post-abortion counselling. The counsellor will not be judging you, but will be helping you to talk things through and explore any issues that arise.

Where will the appointment take place?

There are 14 Cura centres nationwide, and 7 more outreach centres. Appointments can also be arranged in your local area if none of these locations suit.

How many appointments will I need?

Usually post-abortion counselling is carried out over the course of several appointments. The number of these appointments can vary, depending on your particular situation and needs.

Is the counsellor specially qualified in this area?

Yes. Your counsellor will have undergone additional training and be specifically qualified in the area of post-abortion counselling.

Can I bring someone along with me to my appointment?

Yes, of course. You may wish to bring a friend or family member along to the first appointment for support, or you may wish to have someone collect you after your appointment. Sometimes a couple may wish to attend together, or may receive counselling separately. It can help you feel more comfortable talking if it is just you and the counsellor in the room. It is up to you.

Will the appointment be confidential?

Yes. What is said in counselling is confidential, within professional working limits on confidentiality. What that means is that if someone is at risk or in danger, or if a child protection issue arises, we cannot guarantee confidentiality, but otherwise the details of your appointments will not be disclosed.

Will the counsellor disapprove of the fact that I have had an abortion?

Our counsellors come from all backgrounds and all walks of life. They work with the self-determination of the client and the client’s ability to make their own decisions. We are here to help, not to judge.
